Resolved Question: Why is buying todays tv’s so Painful?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I am looking at buying a 42inch tv. But which, plasma or lcd? I personally will be using the tv for things such as xbox 360 and I also watch plenty of football on the weekends. But no review I read can give a straight answer and to make matters worse I keep reading that lcd manufactures specs, mainly response time cannot be completely trusted plus they don’t always state if response time is white - black - white or gray to gray.

I just want a tv that has a good picture that has no lag for fast moving pictures and also works well with gaming.

Any thoughts are appreciated, I really can’t understand this tv crap because i can’t help but think if my old crt works fine for sports and games than lcd and plasma could not be worse and i’m worrying over nothing

Open Question: Blu-Ray Questions?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

So…im in the market for a blu-ray player…probably a PS3 after the reviews i’ve read on it…and its versatility as an all in one unit. What can i expect resolution wise on my 720p Panasonic Viera Plasma when vierwing blu-ray? They are always demo-ing blu-ray on 1080p in the stores…so i cannot get a grasp on what i’m going to see on 720p. Am i looking at a big jump up from DVD? I know the frame rates are higher on Blu-ray…but i know true dvd is in 720p. I have my current setup broadcasting 720p over HDMI on a Harman Kardon DVD player and it looks pretty sharp. My TV’s model number is TH-42PX80U. Thanks!

Resolved Question: What are Satellite Speakers?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I know I might sound like a real noob, but what exactly are satellite speakers? Are they wireless, or wired? If they are wireless, then are all the speakers that come in the set wireless? I’m building my own home theater this summer and I would like to have wireless speakers if possible to avoid the hastle of installation and cord management. I’ve looked at other answers and its still not really clear to me. Thanks for your input.

Resolved Question: How can I get my Panasonic Home Theater System to give surround sound when only watching TV?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I just recently purchased a Panasonic TH-50PX75U Plasma and the Panasonic SC-PT650 Home Theater System. I didn’t want to pay for the installation so we did it on our own. The only problem e have encountered is we can not get the surround sound to work when just watching cable or playing video games. It only works when using the DVD player. Is there a way to make it work?
Will these answeres provide surround sound when using Nintendo Wii?

Resolved Question: No peripherals, monitor, wireless mouse/keyboard.?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I have an older Compaq Presario s4020wm about 4 years old. I recently had the power supply fixed and it was working great. I brought it out of retirement to add to my home theater. I was installing a wireless internet card that i took from another Presario and during installation i accidentally hit the power button and turned on the tower. Everything was ok until the card was plugged in, at first the light came on then nothing. The screen locked up and the wireless keyboard sensor no longer lit up while plugged into the usb port. I shut down and rebooted now i have no monitor and the harddrive doesn’t kick on. The fans and cd rom still have power but nothing else seems to work. If anyone has had a similar problem please help.

Resolved Question: Using Magnolia Home Theater/Geek Squad for a Home Theater Project?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I am considering using the Magnolia Home Theater/Geek Squad division of Best Buy to purchase and install a fairly complex home theater project and would like to know if anyone has had any experiences (good or bad) with these companies. Their prices appear to be a lot more reasonable than other high-end custom installation companies, but I want to make sure I am not going to end up with an inferior product.

Resolved Question: I’m looking for a job in home theater/electronics in CT. Any suggestions on where to begin?

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I’ll admit right away that I am still a novice when it comes to electronics, but I’ve been developing an obsession the past couple years and believe it could be a great career move. I am always setting up TV’s and sound systems for friends and family as well as advising them on what to buy. I figure why not try to make this a living and actually be happy at work? I have no professional training, experience, or certifications. I am willing to take courses and invest money, even start off with a not so glamorous job. My goal would be to either get into installation or consulting. Either way, I’d love to become an expert in home theater. I just don’t know where to go or what to do to start things off. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks.
Great responses so far. I’ll try finding businesses around here and see if I could get an entry-level position. Is there no experience required for most places to start? I’m also a bit concerned of what the pay may be to start.
